Dodos
Primarily extant in the writings of authors and the paintings of artists, the Dodo was a bird with fluffy feathers which stood approximately 2.3 feet high. The Dodo could neither swim nor fly. It was larger than the first suggested US national bird, the Turkey.
The last confirmed sighting of a Dodo was 1662. It took approximately 100 years from the discovery to the extinction, of this ground-dwelling bird. As with the Loch Ness Monster and Elvis, unconfirmed sightings of the Dodo have been reported.
It was Lewis Carroll who first introduced me to the ubiquitous Dodo. In Carroll’s, ‘ Alice in Wonderland, it is the Dodo who suggests a ‘Caucus,’ to dry the beleaguered characters wet form swimming in a ‘pool of tears’. When asked what a Caucus was, the Dodo, “… marked out a race-course, in a sort of circle, (`the exact shape doesn’t matter,’ it said,) and then all the party were placed along the course, here and there. There was no `One, two, three, and away,’ but they began running when they liked, and left off when they liked, so that it was not easy to know when the race was over. However, when they had been running half an hour or so, and were quite dry again, the Dodo suddenly called out `The race is over!’ and they all crowded round it, panting, and asking, `But who has won?..” Lewis Carroll, from Alice in Wonderland.
In November, 2017, a nearly complete Dodo skeleton was verified and sold for a record price.
